Shahid Zarastvand Geological Museum, University of Tehran, is the oldest scientific Geological Museum, which dates back to the 1320s. Since the establishment of the Department of Natural Sciences in 1317 at the University of Tehran, professors at the time, including the late Dr. Yadollah Sahabi and Dr. Fereydoon Farshad and other colleagues, collected various rock-fossil specimens of Iran and purchased a number of specimens from abroad. They founded the Geological Museum of the University of Tehran. Since then, the collection of samples by other professors and graduate students has gradually increased the scientific richness of this museum and is constantly being supplemented and increased.

Due to the great diversity of Iran lithology and its good protrusions, many researchers from other universities in the world since the establishment of the Department of Geology at the University of Tehran and after the formation of the Geological Survey of Iran have done a lot of research in different parts of Iran. Some of the results have been collected over time in the Geological Museum of the University of Tehran.

The Geological Museum of the University of Tehran has more than one hundred thousand beautiful rock-mineral-fossil specimens, which are available in two separate sections:

1. Research Museum: which includes very interesting and attractive scientific collections from different parts of Iran and other parts of the world, which are of interest to geological researchers in Iran and the world. These specimens are located in the current location of the museum and include the following collections.

  • Minerals: Includes silicate minerals-oxides-carbonates-sulfides-sulfates-halides and pure natural elements.
  • Igneous rock collection: which includes all different types of acidic-medium-base and super-acidic igneous rocks.
  • Sedimentary assemblies: which includes all types of detrital-chemical and biochemical sedimentary rocks as well as various sedimentary structures.
  • Metamorphic rock collection: which includes all types of metamorphic rocks in different metamorphic facies.
  • Fossil collection: which includes different types of vertebrate and invertebrate animal fossils and plant fossils.
  • A set of different geological structures: which includes various types of strata and faults.
  • Collection of various fossil and crystal models.
  • In addition to the above collections, two valuable specimens of moonstones are also among the interesting parts of this museum.

2. Educational Museum: it includes various stone-fossil collections of Iran that are concentrated in the corridors of the faculty and laboratories and are used by students and other sections of society.
