Microbiology and Immunology

Microbiology and immunology group of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, is composed of four departments including Bacteriology, Virology, Immunology and Mycology.
1-    Education and Training of  Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students, Master of Science and PhD in Mycology students
2-    Designing, conducting and performing fundamental, developmental and applied researches in different fields of mycology
3-    Isolation, Identification and deposit of native fungal strains (pathogen and non-pathogen)
4-    Providing specialized services to institutes, organizations and NGOs (experimental and field studies)
5-    Study and research in application of natural products in treatment of fungal infections and mycotoxins' control
Master of Science in Mycology: 4 semesters
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Mycology: 8 semesters
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students, after completing the course "Mycology, Fungal infections and Mycotoxins" will be able to:
1-    Diagnose fungal infections in animals
2-    Identify common fungal strains in laboratory
3-    Play an important role in control and prevention of mycotoxins' hazards
Graduated students of Master and PhD courses, according to the acquired competencies, could play significant role in organizations, educational institutions, research institutes and NGOs in the following:
1-    Diagnose fungal infections and identify the exact fungal pathogen
2-    Design, conduct and perform research projects in advanced mycology
3-    Identify mycotoxins and develop controlling protocols
4-    Evaluate antifungal resistant and develop new antifungal pharmaceuticals based on natural products
5-    Study host-fungus interactions in cellular and molecular levels; design and identify immunostimulatory products in treatment of fungal infections
6-    (immunotherapy)
The Immunology Section is one of the academic sections of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tehran. The section is responsible for teaching and research in the broad field of comparative cellular, molecular and clinical Immunology with special focus on Veterinary (domestic and wild animals) Immunology. This section employs several Faculty members with different expertise in the field of cellular and molecular Immunology. The core facilities of this section are located at the Immunology laboratory, which is equipped with the appropriate experimental instruments for teaching undergraduate and graduate students in the Faculty. Moreover, with the facilities in the Central laboratory and laboratory animal section of the faculty the Immunology Sections focuses on various laboratory animal experimental models and advanced in vivo, in vitro and ex-vivo systems for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The section provides a state of the art environment for various aspects of basic and clinical Immunology as well as comparative cellular and molecular Immunology research available to the academic staff and the post- and
undergraduate students at the Faculty. The Immunology Section is intensively working on developing advanced diagnostic tests for pathogen and antigen detection; it also provides services for immunological and molecular approach of detection and identification of some diseases in domestic and wild animals.
At the Section of Immunology, two full-time academic staff (one professor and one associate professor) with one full-time MSc and several undergraduate (DVM) and post-graduate (Ph.D.) students are currently working on various subjects in the fields of cellular and molecular Immunology (basic and applied/clinical). The research projects currently conducted at this section involve Innate Immunity and Inflammation, Immunogenetics, Pattern Recognition Receptors (PRRs), Leukocyte Immunobiology in animals and humans, Immunotoxicology, Immunoregulation, Immunomodulation, Dendritic Cell (DC)-based Immunotherapy, T-cells-based
immunotherapy, Cancer Immunology, nanosystems in Immunology, Immunological Approach of Ag Detection, Ab production for diagnosis and treatment purposes, Vaccinology, New generations of Vaccines and Adjuvants.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Immunology: 8 semesters
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students, after completing the courses of "Fundamental Immunology and Clinical Immunology" will be able to: 1) better understand the host-pathogen interactions 2) conduct some diagnostic assays, 3) efficiently work on vaccine and vaccination program and prevention of infectious diseases, 4) how best to improve animal and human immunity and health…. and continue their scientific specialty in various fields of immunology, Immunobiology and clinical Immunology in various animals and humans. Graduated students of Ph.D. courses, according to the acquired competencies, could play a significant role in teaching and research in governmental and non-governmental organizations, academia and educational institutions in the various areas of Immunology.
